i just picked up an 01 4runner with brand new tires 245/75/16 (mastercraft courser axt) but very badly beaten up rims...so i purchased some rims that i wanted but found out that they are 8.5 inches wide. The tire says "mount only on 8inch rims"

What will the extra .5inch width affect? is it dangerous?

yes

The acceptable rim width for those tires is probably 6.5-8"

you could end up with bad wear, handling, etc.

Approved rim width is 6.5 to 8 inches.
I have run rims from 1/2 to 1 inch over width for years with no problems.
Just keep a close watch on tread depth and adjust pressure as needed to get even wear.

It's probably fine. The ricers are driving around on tires stretched like this, I see it every day.

Using rims that are too wide tends to de-arch the tread, making the tire wear in the shoulders and not track straight. It will tend to make the vehicle directionally unstable and "hunt" - that is shift back and forth trying to find "straight ahead".

That's why there is an allowable rim width range. Within that range things should be OK, but outside that range, you can get issues - and the further outside that range, the more likely you are to have issues.
