Hello all, below is a UOA of my BMW that saw 2 road course events and 1 autocross. First event was 3 25 minute sessions. Oil temps stabilized at 270F. The second event was 6 20 minute sessions, the first session i forgot to take my cowl and engine cover off so my oil temp hit 280F oops

The rest of the sessions the oil temp stabilized around 265F.

The car has many mods and alternates between 93 octane, and a 30% E85 mix depending on the event. Roughly 500hp on 30% E85 (stock is 300hp). After market air filters, upgraded oil cooler, and Mann oil filer.

Nice! I have a modified 335i as well and have been trying to decide between a euro 0w40 or a HDEO like Rotella. Looks like M1 held up well here.

We will never know!

I see your running 0w-40 in your M3... What made you choose that over a 5w-50 or the specced 10w-60?

Quite a few of E90/E92 M3s have abnormal rod bearings wear, a few actually blew up due to rod bearings failure.

Refer to this thread on m3post.com: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1039320

I chose 0W40 because my guess is that 10W60 is simply way too thick for a car that has a really tight bearing clearance, especially during cold start. If 10W60 is really necessary, then why would Ferrari prescribe 5W40 for their 9000RPM 458 Italia? And what's up with M1 0W40 being the factory oil for all Porsche 911 GT3 that revs to 9000RPM?

I know I'm going against BMW's requirement, but my car runs fine with 0W40, quicker warm up, faster rev...and lots of other M3 owners are also running 0W40 or 5W40 with great results. Many confirmed lower lead bearings wear via UOA after they switch to 0W40.

Valid points. I suppose the 10w-60 spec was generated because the expected racing conditions. For example the Enzo specs 10w-60 Along with Aston Martin. If you don't race it then 0w-40 is probably fine for normal use as you have proven.
