Chevron Supreme and Havoline Conventional

Both are on the shelf at Bi-Mart, a regional discount chain and I have purchased both at different times. The Chevron has more phosphorus and zinc and a higher base number, but the Havoline adds some small amount of magnesium. My next oil change is going to be the 5W-30 Havoline with 125ml of Liqui Moly MoS2.

Sometimes companies make a big deal about keeping the formulas a little different in order to be honest about the labels. I don't know why they couldn't just keep the Havoline and ChevSupreme formulas the same. Brand, marketing differentiation.
As for the Magnesium Joshua_Skinner cited, thats nothing really since almost all current motor oils use calcium sulfonate overbased detergents, and even Castrol Edge, which used to run a lot of magnesium detergents, has changed their formula to the more popular calcium compound detergents.
I do like the higher base number and higher zinc formula of ChevSupreme though, and ChevSupreme also has better cold viscosity numbers too.
