Hi all, This is my first shared UOA here. I'm on a 5 mile commute now, and had bought a 3-pack of Castrol Act-Evo 10w-40 in gallon jugs. The shifting got kinda rough toward the end of the run, and I found neutral instead of 2nd gear more times than I would like. Kawasaki 10w-40 went back in, with a Fram Ultra filter.

Blackstone notes:
Quote:

I logged the viscosity in as a 10W/40, but it read more in the 5W/20 range, similar to last time.
Some fuel was found, but that's not enough to thin the viscosity out. Wear changed a bit since last year's
sample, but everything is still within the average range. The TBN was strong at 5.1. I've found my shifting to
get rough towards the end of an oil change too. A fresh fill of oil always smoothes things out for my Honda.
That might be a good gauge as to when to change the oil, or you could try 9,000 miles next. A trace of
insolubles shows excellent oil filtration. ~Luke

Are you comfortable with running essentially a 20W oil for 5000 miles? Thats about what it shears down to in 3K or so. The makers of the Can Am that I ride says it can go to 9300 between oil changes but I'm not convinced so I change every 4-5K max.

I ran CAstrol Actevo 10-40 Blend in it one time and at 2K it was down to a mid-30W. I never tried thier full synthetic.

If I do run this Castrol again, I'll definitely run it shorter. I'm thinking somewhere in the 4-5k range. I thought about Castrol or Mobil Full synth, but i figure if I'm paying that much, I'll go Motul or Maxim instead. Either way, based on other UOA's, they don't seem to be all that much better.

I sent off a sample of Mobil1 4T to be tested a couple days ago. It had
a little over 4500 miles on it. We'll see how M1 fared compared to Amsoil, Motul 5100,
and Rotella T that I've tested. Most good brand synthetics I've tested at 4K had sheared to the 30W range. Rotella T conventional tested at 3K was still in mid-upper 30W so it would
likely have gone to 4K as well as the others. You can get a gallon of it for the price of
a quart of some boutique oils. LOL.
