My sister's 2005 Chrysler Town & Country minivan with the 3.8 is throwing a P0406 code for the EGR system/valve. This is apparently a common problem for these vans and somewhat of an easy fix. The issue is that there are two types of EGR valve/sensor combo replacement units available from the usual places, and the correct one depends on what 'option code' the van has, either with or without 'option code XZZ'. Some are saying the XZZ code is in the VIN somewhere while others are saying that a Chrysler dealer needs the VIN to determine which part is correct. Some suggest that XZZ means California emissions so I would be safe buying the non-XZZ part.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

I don't have any direct experience with this issue (though we do own an identical van!), but it is true that a dealer can look up the correct part by VIN. I've never looked for a data plate/sticker on our van, but I would guess it may be somewhere in the engine compartment.
