Hi all,

I am planning to drain & fill the coolant. I am wondering what color should I use (orange, red or yellow) for 1983 Toyota Cressida (5M-GE) since the coolant seems yellowish with greasy black stuff and I did not think it has been flushed before.

I'd find some true classic green that isn't the dex cool type, or else go G-05 after a lot of flushing.

I believe that classic green was the only stuff available in 1983 so that's what I would use. It's still available at AA and many other places.

Toyota engines of 20 years old or older are very easy on coolant, any Preston or Peak all-makes all-models is okay, and that is what I used in my LS400 for more than 20 years 370k miles without problem. It had 1 new water pump after 19-20 years and 1 new thermostat after 15-16 years.

I noticed that there is yellow coolant. Do you think it will a problem drain and refill with tap water then drain and refill with green coolant?

Yes, I would go with Prestone green as well.

I had an 82 Supra back in the day... awesome car.

But it needs to be the real green coolant, not dyed dex cool that looks green.

Id go on the more conservative and sure side and flush and go G-05 so you know for sure product quality. It was fit to my MB cars in 81 and 82...

It was the best sport coupe of the early to mid 80's. I had a 2-tone Red on Black '82 Supra for few years, I loved it.

That black stuff may be bits of old coolant hoses. You may want to see if your existing hoses have become too soft, too brittle, or are excessively expanded at the ends.

Do you know how old all your coolant hoses are?

To be honest, I do not know. But I noticed the car overheat when I drive it for long period with air-conditioning on. So, I stopped and I noticed that there is spill of coolant underneath the car.

I am wondering now what is the problem?

To be caution, I will change the thermostat, water pump, and check all hoses. I will also flush the coolant to make sure if there is air in the system + plus the fuse of the fan, enough?

First, how about reporting back when you find that fan fuse.

It should not be hard to find the leak and if you would have described where it was under the car I could tell you what to check.

Depending on if the temp gauge is just up a bit (which is normal during hot summer) or up more. You may need to have the radiator rodded out since it could be that you have lost about 30 % of it's cooling capacity. The signs for that are if it slowly continue to creeps up (temp gauge) at sustained high speed driving during hot summer day.

I'd say the best coolant you could get for that vehicle is Zerex Green; it's a true green coolant with low silicates. No organic acid, no 2-EHA, but still low silicate so it will lats a bit longer than the old traditional green

Toyota Red works just fine on those.
