P1169 code came up. I cleared it with my scanner and pulled the FI and backup fuses for a few minutes to reset the computer. It is an O2 sensor high voltage code according to my research. Anyone know much about it? I'm thinking a new O2 if it comes back on.

I was gonna say hopefully its not the 5-wire o2, I remember they were reportedly $300 - but I see one listed as $150 on RockAuto. Definitely verify and shop around if you think that's the issue.

For others - these HX Civics can run in lean-burn and have expensive o2s vs non-HX Civics of the era. Helps them sip gas when under lower loads.

Yes. Mine has the 5 wire expensive one. Any ideas what else might be tripping this code? I had pulled the FI and backup fuses so I had to reset my stereo and everything. Seems like car runs a bit different now. Should be relearning according to my research online. That's why I pulled those fuses. Hopefully no more engine light.

Artificialist what do you mean about the exhaust leak? That might cause it? I don't hear any exhaust leak and it passed emissions testing here in CA about a month ago. The car feels weaker now after resetting the ecu by fuses, but might be in my head, still relearning, or is how it should be now. Last tank I got 44.5mpg so I doubt there are any major problems...

It's most likely the sensor itself, but considering the cost of the item you could look into testing it.

For my previous vehicle, with the same 5-wire wide band as yours, the FSM mentions to test for the CEL on the sensor by putting the car in 3rd gear and holding speed at 30 MPH. I did this after clearing the code, and it consistently tripped the code so I knew the sensor was bad. And of course it would be, at the time it was roughly an 18 year old sensor with 240k miles.

I got a replacement Standard Motor Products p/n SG335 for $60 new off of RA. They pulled it in favor of a new P/N stamp and a more competitive price since the market has wideband A/F sensors for these cars at such a high price point. The sensor itself was an NTK made in Japan.

$60 vs $150 or so for that I'll take it. Either is better than $300+ for the Bosch or the $600+ the dealership locally wanted.

lel.

If you can't find that for a good price get the Denso 234-5052 or NTK 24300; whatever is cheaper or if you prefer one brand, etc. Of course this is if you confirm the code re-occurs and you need emissions pass next year.

Man I guess I jinxed it! Came on a couple miles into my drive today. When I stopped for about an hour, I pulled the fuses again. No check engine light on startup. But that only lasted about a mile. I had even let it idle for 10 minutes before shutting off and restarting as recommended online. New oxygen sensor probably in my very near future.

Shop around. Anything under $150 is a good deal 'relatively' (extremely stressing relative lol) for these sensors, IMO.

Yep. Rockauto has a denso for like $160 shipped I think it was. I'm gonna go ahead and order rear brake shoes and hardware kit while I'm at it. I did pull the sensor and soak in seafoam and blast with air compressor a few times before cleaning with Berryman and blasting dry with air compressor. Reinstalled and it definitely runs different. I didn't erase the engine light code though, because tomorrow I'm a "mystery shopper" for service centers and I figure a check engine light would be good for the test.

it is a general rule that exhaust leaks can cause O2 sensor error codes, however, I cannot see from here if you have an exhaust leak or not.

I'm just telling you a general rule of diagnosing a car, sort of like warning people to check their PCV system when losing oil, even when I can't see the car.

I don't hear any exhaust leak but I pulled the sensor out and cleaned it. Soaked in seafoam for 5 min or so before blasting with air compressor. Did that 3x the sprayed with Berryman carb cleaner and blasted dry with air compressor. Maybe 4x? Could see some stuff on the outside came off but I don't know if anything happened inside. Car definitely ran different. Pulled the fuses again to reset the computer. Only idled about 15 minutes and driven a mile or so. Got my fingers crossed. Otherwise my rockauto cart is filling up with the O2 and brake parts and stuff already. How would I find an exhaust leak if I don't hear one?

So far since cleaning the O2 and resetting the computer I have put about 500 miles on the car with no CEL yet. 45.7mpg last tank with mostly easy freeway but some steep hills and a/c here and there. Would be nice if CEL stays off. Need to do rear brakes before too long.

Just an update... Code keeps coming back after resetting. Just got my shipment from RA yesterday so I'm about to head outside and replace the oxygen sensor. Brakes will have to wait, but I really hope the O2 fixes the CEL issue. My mpg has been about 38 average lately where it was closer to 42 before.

Yeah, without the LAF 5-wire sensor in place the engine won't lean the mixture. I believe the HX had this function, too right? In other words no surprise your fuel economy has dropped during the CEL since it can't get reliable readings from the sensor.

The VX models from 92-95 and HX 96-99(?) had the 'lean burn' engines that kept 1 of the 2 intake valves partially closed. One guy modded his older VX and was able to keep it in lean burn up to 70 MPH when usually engagement was between 1500-2200 RPMs.

Unfortunately, since my VX got stolen I've missed the good old 40 MPG tanks. Barely getting 30 MPG in the '07 Fit with A/T.

Bummer yours got stolen. I always lock it and put the club on the steering wheel but if someone wants it that bad I guess they'll get it. How did he mod the lean burn to stay to higher rpm? Is there a link or something to google in particular?
