There is a bunch of cheap, OBD II interface devices available on places like e-bay. Who has any experience with these? Interested in monitoring coolant and trans temps while towing. (04 F-150)

Example, HERE

I have a more basic version of the X431 Launch EasyDiag, about $20 from aliexpress if you don't need two car lines. Additional car lines are $40.

For the OP however, you're better off getting Forscan, works on Ford cars and it's free so a basic ELM327 OBDII scanner is all you need.

I had one of those cheaper $~10 little blue dongles, it worked for my Element then stopped connecting after a year or so. Then I got a BAFX OBD2 reader, it's a little more expensive at about $25, but it actually connected to my phone faster and was more stable than the cheap one. It's only been about 10 months, so I can't attest to its longevity yet.

When I was on Android, I used Torque Pro and an ELM327 Bluetooth unit I bought off E-bay. Been working well for a couple years now.

I've been using torque pro and cheap elm 327 Bluetooth for probably 5 years. Works great on all my gm vehicles. I have tried it on an f150 and focus. It did not work on either of those.

Usually standard OBDII code scanners just read basic error codes, something like the Launch EasyDiag should be able to read other systems but you have to buy one car line.

Something like just the transmission temperature may be part of the standard OBDII data, but sometimes not.

Google your exact car and "transmission temp obd2" and you'll find a forum where someone has tried it or if it is not possible.

I love it. It works very well on my Samsung. It can read and clear codes including SRS and ABS codes. You can also use it for real time data while the car is being driven. Very nice tool.
Where is more information about this? It claims to do SRS and ABS but is there a list of supported vehicle models for that feature? Also does it have bi-directional ability?

They have a forum where you could possibly get your questions answered:

I've used an ELM327 bluetooth reader on my fleet of Toyota, Nissan and Mazda cars. I've not tried it on the Grand Marquis yet, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

It's a little finicky connecting to Bluetooth on my phone, but once connected, it's fine.

I have grown pretty fond of the BlueDriver OBD scanner. Works fantastic with my iPhone. Reads and clears codes and links online for detailed code description and solutions. Records real time engine data while operating the vehicle and graphs the data. Nice little unit.

Could be. I know they claim that is reads all "enhanced" codes from airbags, transmission, ABS, etc from GM, Ford, Chrysler, and Toyota vehicles. No experience with that so going only on what they claim.
