Can anyone recommend a good way to get chains sharp other than a hand file? I apparantly am terrible at it, every time I sharpen by hand with a file I can't cut straight to save my life.
For about $20 you can get a hand file kit and maintain your chains near perfect. The key is to find someone (Stihl dealer?)to take 30 minutes and teach you the skill. It is not rocket science and the simple guides below maintain all of the correct angles.
It still uses a hand file, but the guide helps you cut the proper angle. It took me about 20 minutes to get the hang of it initially, but now I use it to sharpen the chain after every time I use it. It only takes five minutes or so to sharpen all the teeth if they're not too dull.
Honestly, I just use the proper size round file and do a couple minute touch up after some use. But seriously just replace the chain periodically. Professsional cutters spend the time and $$ for good sharpening equipment. The non professionals wast time and $$ sharpening their own. Just not worth it for me. Again depends how hard you use the saw.
