I've only had my car for 1.5 years (2005 325i 100k mi). It was purchased from a lemon lot (big mistake). I did two OCIs. First to get rid of the mystery oil that was in there from the lemon lot. Then I filled with Castrol 5W40 and did a 1 year 9k mi OCI.

The first time I changed it there were tiny metallic flakes at the bottom of the used oil drain pan. One year later with Castrol 5W40 there were still some metallic flakes. Not nearly as much flakes as the first time but still some flakes.

Is it likely that the metallic flakes are from the abuse the car suffered on the lemon lot, or does my lubrication strategy need to be re-thinked?

The big question is are the flakes from the engine or a product like restore. The next time you do an OC check the particles with a magnet, if they are magnetic then its definitely coming from an engine part and you have some serious wear going on.
If not it might be from an additive the lemon lot used to hide noise or a oil user/smoker,
