Why is Land Rovers expensive to buy...

That video paints a wonderful picture. I wonder what the total cost of ownership might be and how well the dealers perform. I don't think that routine maintenance is going to be any kind of bargain. This is one of those vehicles you might not want to own after the factory warranty expires. All those gadgets are going to get tough to keep working as the vehicle ages.

I was going to make a snarky remark about Lucas gadgets (are they Lucas?). But all those gadgets do some pretty amazing things in transforming the handling / performance of the vehicle.

It's a luxury pavementcrawler for rich soccer moms and idiots with more money than brain. It's a nice car, but probably the worst reliability of any brand in the world right now... and no one can help that godawful ugliness.

If someone can find me a person that actually uses a new Land Rover for offroading regularly, they'd be the first.

I think its the "Mercedes" for people who want a rugged looking SUV. But as with many expensive cars, if you can afford the car, you should be able to afford the repairs.

It's not really THAT expensive for what you get. Compare it to the $71k Dodge Ram in an earlier post. I would rather spend my hard earned dollars on a proper preforming vehicle.

I do not think these cars are unreliable. You have quite a lot more going on than in a less performance oriented car so the overall chance of something going bad is higher. For example, in the video after he got out of the water, he banged up the side trim on a tree trunk -- I estimate about $3k to fix it. If you are never able to drive the car in such conditions, by definition you will never have that problem.

After this video, I will seriously consider this Range Rover as my next car.

LandRover's acquisition by Tata Motors has been good for their quality.

Completely aluminum chassis took off several hundred pounds, too.

Not on my list, but the folks around here love them. Lots of snob appeal...

Just because it has the Land Rover name, that doesnt mean it is built for off-roading. Look at the new Jeep Cherokee or Jeep Renegade. Do you have the same opinion about these folks as you do the Land Rover owners? Probably not. Locally, you see a lot of them parked in the hospital parking lots. Probably owned by doctors and surgeons with 8+ years of college education.. Idiots right? Also whenever I hear someone refer to someone else as rich, i sense a bit of jealousy.

I compare the newer ones in the US to say the Audi Q series crossovers. The Defenders on the other hand are pretty rugged. Since they are so hard to get here, I imagine more could be found in Europe and Australia used for off-roading purposes. etc.

How do idiots acquire more money than brain?

Idiots can acquire money over brain by;
Being good at sports
Being good at robbery
Doing porn
Winning the lottery
Inheritance

Or, like most other people out there, work harder and spend less.

To answer the OPs question, Land Rover are expensive because they are a business who exist to make profit and so the play on the badge and image perception to make people cough up a lot more than they should.

The ones driving these usually marry into it. So that would be a sub-class of "doing porn" in the above post.

Some women will 'marry up' no matter how unhappy it makes them.

After pumping out 1, 2 or 3 kids.... she can divorce and find the right guy while ex husband finances her lifestyle.

That's my idea of a $70k truck, not a pickup.

The supercharged sport is a blast, plant your foot and its worth every penny.

I'd lease one, they don't hold their value to well.

Or you could just buy a G wagon which is better.

I give the LR guys lots of credit, they have a wonderful club and the owners are very enthusiastic. But being British...man they put up with a lot.

Top Gear tested the Autobiography edition, which goes for $92,495.

How "proper performing" do you think that Range Rover will be with 17,000lbs. in tow, or 2,500lbs. in the cargo hold? They're different vehicles, for different purposes.

Oh really? Cause outside the USofA Land Rovers have a great reputation, as do Toyota's. Ever wonder why you don't see the UN running around in to many jacked up F350's?

The big three that actually get you know driven around the world literally, are Toyota's Land Cruiser, Mercedes G wagon, and the Land Rover.

They have a wonderful club and do drives across vast stretch's of the globe. I'd love to to a Paris to Beijing.
