I cut it open because the can was dented at the top dome-end, so I didn't want to use it. There was no way to tell whether the can was usable without cutting. The date code is A50053, not sure how to decode it, though! Sorry for no pic of the date code, but I cut right in the middle of it, and it's hard to see anyway. At least I remembered to get it before cutting!

A few thoughts:

The pink media color is awesome, but Fram seems to have cheaped out on the quantity, as the media cartridge was rather short (and to think the 6607 is half the size or less!). Purolator's 14610 filters give you more media with a taller cartridge. I have never used a Wix in this size (1356/7356).

The spring thing is weird. A black dot with a few clips on the other end, coil/leaf hybrid. The dome end of the filter it attaches to is fuzzy, lined with gray felt. The spring stays put and fits snugly inside the filter.

Why does the thread end of the filter have those nubs? It made it hard to get the filter out of the can!

The filter smells like dukee inside.

Also, would you have used this filter in light of the dent but not knowing it was structurally sound after all?

OK, here are the pics!

The 7317 is tiny and the 6607 is smaller. The 9688 is a larger alternative assuming you have the room.

To me, it looks like the end cap with the nubs was crimped onto the media during assembly. Can you tell how the media/ wire backing secured to the end caps?

If the filter didn't rattle when shaken, I would have ran it worry free.

The Ultra as well as the TG's do have a particular odor.. I dont mind it though.

Hehhh... I do.

The best BITOGers can tell you the brand of filter presented to them blindfolded, just by smelling inside the can.

I'm not that good. Yet.

But for real, some of them smell good. Just not all of them.

There's still plenty of media in that filter for the intended applications (I-4s and V-6s). I rather like the coil spring poppet valve bypass design instead of the flat spring that some other brands use. I'm sure both are as effective as the other, but I feel the flat spring stands a better chance of permanent deformation and I like the positive action of a coil spring more.

Those "nubs" are used to help keep the thread end of the element stationary inside the can, thus the difficulty in removing it. It's just a design feature used by some manufacturers.

As for the bypass/poppet valve, standard Fram design used in combination with the leaf retainer spring. Looks normal.

As for using it, I can't tell how bad the dent really was, but looking at the internals alone, looks like it could have been used with no issue. Guess it just depends on how much of thrill seeker you want to be.

They smell because I believe a small amount of oil is used in manufacturing them(before installing them I noticed a very very small amount of what I think is clear oil on inside of the filter). I have noticed this while installing them on all my different vehicles.

Good to see a fresh one cut open. I have a dented one, hard to say if the dent will be where the spring lies or what, so it is reasonable not to take a chance.
Like someone said the nubs appear to be for centering. The ADBV does not fit into a recess on the baseplate to center it. On the Purolators I have cut open I have found yet another defect, the ADBV is over size on the baseplate threaded hole, for a 3/4" size thread filter, so the element can move side to side about 2mm, probably enough to lose the ADBV function in some cases. On other filters the valve fits tight or in this case they put the nubs on the bottom end cap.

It was hard to snap a picture of the dent because it's on top with the matte black SureGRIP textured coating, so it doesn't come out well in photos.

If it didn't rattle when shook, I would have run it without worry.

Also keep in mind synthetic media due to it's much smaller filament size has a much higher capacity for trapping particulate matter while still maintaining flow than a cellulose media filter. So just because the filter is physically smaller than an equivalent cellulose filter from another (or even the same) brand doesn't mean it won't perform as good. In fact it may even provide better flow, better filtration, and more capacity despite the smaller size.

The Purolator Synthetic PSL14610 has more media than the XG7317.

In this case, the size difference has nothing to do with media type as much as it does the company. Fram's TG7317 and OCOD PH7317 are likely short on media as well, most likely the same size as the Ultra's cartridge. Purolator Classic L14610 has the same size media as the PL14610 and PSL14610.

Here's one PSL14610 and another

The first "5" means 2015
The 005 after the first 5 means the 005 day of 2015.

So this filter was made on Jan 5, 2015.

Thanks! Do you know what the A and the 3 mean?

Example: A32471
A = Plant
3 = Year
247 = Julian Date
1 = shift

So this one would be Greenville OH, 2003 or 2013, Aug 29th, first shift.

It turns out that Fram just uses a shorter height, but wider, can of media than Purolator does. Probably the same amount of media, or at least the same when comparing to the same tier. That is,
PH7317 vs L14610
TG7317 vs PL14610
XG7317 vs PSL14610

Here is a comparison between the XG7317 and an L14610
