I have an ex Honda tech that used to work at a Honda Dealer working for us part time and he said they used 5w30 in some of the higher mileage v-tech engines at the dealer. He drives a 2003 Honda civic with 170,000 miles on it and has used 5 w 30 since he got it. Does anyone here use 5w30 in their civic's ??

When we rebuild them we use 5w20

My 1999 Civic w/450,000 ran on 5w30 it's whole life. What are you trying to get at? Are you surprised people still use 5w30?

The 7th gen (01+) were specified with 5w20, which is all we've used in our 2001 with about 230k now. I doubt anyone would even notice if we switched to 5w30.

BTW, its vtec.

Honda doesn't have V-Tech Engines, Honda has VTEC(Variable-valve Timing and lift Electronic Control) engines.

Until around 2000 Honda recommends 5W30 for most vehicles, VTEC engines included. Honda recommends 10W30 for VTEC engines(F20C and F22C) in S2000.

There you go. The engines are the SAME units whether here in the US, Europe, or Australia for that matter. I would use 5w-30 in ANY Honda engine and prefer it, HOWEVER for warranty reasons I would use what American Honda specifies. When the warranty runs out use 5w-30.

5w30 after 2001 was only for their high output engines, honda sadly doesnt make anything like that anymore, and no the new si is not one of them.

Over here 10W-40 was recommended for the B16A engine in the Civic and CRX. I used all sorts in mine though, the best was a 0W-30 prototype oil, but I also had good experience with a synthetic 5W-30.

I never put xw20 in any Honda over the last 10 years, i use spec 5w30 or 0w40 and it works great, no consumption issues, power is the same and no noticeable loss of fuel economy.
5w20 in some have a lot of mechanical noise but on 5w30 or 0w40 they are glass smooth and quiet.

5W30 here in any I build, never used 5w20 in any of them except maybe the newer, low output engines that spec it. My fully built B18C -R motor gets 5W-50 but it shears oil pretty quick shifting at 9200rpm.

Any Honda with the old flat tappet style valvetrain (B, D and H series) motors will sound like sewing machines on 5w-20

My 2001 Accord bought new now has 272K miles. It sounds better and uses less oil using higher visc than 0W20. I base this comparing the last two changes, previous fill Subaru 0W20 and the current fill a mix of 5W30 Mobil 1, and TGMO 0w20.

Si's still get 5w30 though. Even now.

The SI uses 20 weight these days.

My 05 Pilot 3.5L VTEC has run on mostly 5w-20, some 0w-20 since I got it. It was a dealer serviced car so probably ran all its previous life on 5w-20. All 7.5K OCI's. Anyway, it burns no noticeable amount of oil, purrs like a kitten and starts instantly, and just turned 140K miles.

Go to the Ridgeline forum and there are member trucks there that have run 300K miles no problem... on 5w-20.
