We bought this mower in 9/2009, and currently have just over 300 hours on it. Within the past 5 hours of using it, it started consuming oil excessively and running extremely rough. I changed the oil at about 290 hours to 15w-40. Manual recommends anything from 0w30 - 10w30. Engine ran fine the first 15 or so hours on 15w40 too. Anyone have any suggestions? A friend took it to try and fix it, and he is positive it isn't the oil but possibly a HG.

It shouldn't be too hard to determine if there is a head gasket issue. Just do a bit of troubleshooting and you'll have your answer.

Those engines do have head gasket issues. I've replaced quite a few. I'd also check the cooling shrouds for mouse nests as that is what usually causes the engine to overheat and blow the head gasket.

With that said, I've never used the 10w30 in Kohler twins except for winter use. 5w40 or 15w40 HDEO works much better and doesn't burn off as fast.
