Just purchased my second w116 300sd and would like to get input on which type of ATF to use on my Transmission.

I just had the odometer repaired so I don't know the exact mileage.

I have had good results using Redline D4 on my (w126) 1988 Mercedes 300sel.

The transmission seems like its working perfectly fine.

I believe the transmission is identified as a 722.120 but I have not looked at the number stamped on the Tranny.

This 300sd is a keeper, like all of my other ones, and I want to make sure that I use an ATF that will make this tranny last a very long time.

Please advise

Yes, it works fine on the 116

Only the newer ones starting in the late 90s (when the 722.6 electronic 5-speed auto was introduced) need special ATF. Anything prior to the late 90s just uses regular Dexron.

What about using a synthetic oil? Redline, Amzoil?

Those would work, too. Really, anything that says Dexron on it will be good for your car. synthetic, blend, or dino, doesn't matter.

BTW, Maxlife is synthetic.

This isn't a tranny specific to this old S class.
This is the old MB four speed autobox that called for a Dex II ATF.
These are pretty unbreakable transmissions and Maxlife ATF would likely be an upgrade over whatever is in there now.
