Why do big cities have better paying jobs?

If I was to be setting up an office, let alone an warehouse or manufacturing facility, WHY would I want to put it in a high rent area, AND pay my staff a premium?

You probably wouldn't. But if your company has been around a major city (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles) for 50plus years you are established. Then you have to weigh the costs of relocation, how many qualified employees you would lose, and most importantly how many customers you would lose by moving to a lower costs location.

I have been involved in a few relocations. The costs of moving almost always exceed estimates.
