2003 Volkswagen Jetta TDI with 285,756 miles:

Blackstone: We don't quantify the amount of soot in a sample as part of the standard analysis, but there was enough soot in this sample to prevent us from obtaining an insolubles reading. Excess soot can show a combustion issue but we're not sure if that's the case since that typically comes with a high viscosity as well. Iron is on the high side of average, showing more steel wear than normal. Other wear metals are in good shape compared to universal averages, which shows typical wear with oil run 8,400 miles. The TBN was strong, but run 4K and check back on iron

The oil has lost viscosity to the point where it's barely hanging onto the bottom of the 40-weight range. I don't think I've ever seen RT6 beat up so badly.

Is this a unit pump or common rail engine?

Fuel dilution is low and Flash Point is still very good. Does the VW TDI have a reputation for shearing oil?

And the Iron was high enough to trigger an oil change anyway.

Do you have other oil analyses for this engine?
