When I assembled my Mini I assumed the transmission was in good shape because the engine was not.
Once the whole car was together, I got the engine running, put it in D and there was no movement, but it spit out oil. "R" did the same.
So power pack came back out (not an easy task), and I examined the hydraulic valves where the book told me the problem would be. Nope. So I pulled apart the end and found a hairline crack in the cast iron cover.
I pulled the clutch pack apart and found the problem. Two of the discs are bent to a conical shape, engaging each other, and the forward pressure plate is broken in 4 pieces. Welding the cover solves that problem (although not cheap to weld cast iron like this), but need to order a clutch pack and stuff.
