Am I reading it right? Both Castrol and Mobil 1 5w40's sheared and lead was way up. The 15w40 had normal wear ...
Go back to 15w40 and resample in 5k miles to see if comes down again.
Or maybe it was just lead sludge that came loose with the thinnr oils, not probable, but ... Are you running leaded (race) fuel?

I agree with going back to a 'thicker' 15W-40 and seeing if it helps.

No other problems seem to be evident...could be a particle streak through the bearings....

I don't like how 'hysterical' the lab is being...31ppm of lead is not 'critical'...yes it's higher than is wanted, but engine will not grenade in the near future.

So the oil I installed after this UOA was a 50/50 blend of Mobil 1 10w40 High Mileage and Mobil 1 15w50 and the Pb plummeted:

To me it looks like M1 5W40 had high viscosity and 15W40 had low viscosity.

This is another bad Castrol 5W40 UOA.

Interesting UOAs. Thanks for posting.

15w40 did have surprisingly low viscosity - but normal wear
M1 5w40's viscosity was higher - and Pb started creeping up
M1 15w50 is what's in the 240 now, it'll be interesting to see what the next UOA looks like.

Volvo has a SB not to use 15W40 in this engine unless under extreme conditions. Most 15W40's have an HTHS viscosity of 3.7-4.0. So, I can't imagine running 15W50 with its 4.5 HTHS viscosity. Could it be the oil is too thick?

I run a 3.5 HTHS viscosity oil in my B230F engine. These engines do not require heavy weight oils.

My 1990 240 with 350,000 just gets Pennzoil 10w-30. Barely takes a sip of oil between oil changes, and runs great. I think the OP is using too thick of oil. I think I could use a 5w-30 in this engine too.

Sam and BigD1 - I live in the mountains and this wagon is regularly loaded w 4 passengers, a full boot, 4 bikes off the back and a space case on top. If you asked a Volvo engineer if he thought a super-high performance G4 15w50 synthetic oil would work well in a 22 year old 240 under those conditions I bet they would approve.

Have you done or seen comparative UOAs in old 240s with various viscosities? I've had a lot of oil analyses performed and, all things being equal, in every instance I've seen thicker oil = less wear.

Beautiful setup - love the US1 rack. My 1993 245 has only 97k so I do not have a series of UOAs yet. Only read the Volvo Service manual and SB on 15W40. If heavy weight oils work for you than great. It wouldn't occur to me to run a 4.5 HTHS viscosity oil, synthetic or not.
