which of these (inc car oils) are ok for a ktm 690

Hi,

I have been running motul 10/50w in my ktm 690 (super motard set up & I have the dirt wheel set up too). Long oci is not a drama as I changed my own oil, filters, servicing, maint work etc. the price of the motul here is slowly going up in my local bikeshop.

Which of these 3 or others available on these site, can I run in the ktm & also which car oils without effecting the clutch pack ?
Main outlets cheaper than bikes shops here are supercheap auto, repco and autobahn often with catalogue specials available by clicking on their websites.

Been reading up on alternatives people down under in Australia use instead of the motorex 10/60w which is even more expensive here and we are limited to choice here.
We don’t get rotella t-6 here. I have read about delo which the main one people talk about is delo 400, which is a 15w/40 iirc.

Some say M 1 10/50w but is abit harder to find here at my main outlets.

I've looked at a few oil analysis reports for this engine, and it seems to shear 60-weight oils down to 40-weight quickly.

I'd probably use either Motul 7100 10w-60, Amsoil SAE60 Motorcycle, or Red Line 20w-60 motorcycle. Are any of these obtainable at a reasonable cost?

Either way, and especially if you use 50-weight, consider a UOA at 3,000 miles.

motul 7100 is $90 here for 4L inc postage.

No luck with the amsoil or Redline.

I did however find a place that sells and posts Rotella t6 (3.75L) for $55

How much do you guys pay for UOA over there ?

Don't use T6 there, it'll shear to a 30 grade rather quickly.
Penrite HPR Diesel 20w-60 is JASO MA rated, so perfect for your wet clutch, and the thicker base oil will make it more resistant to shearing. No problem with the 20w above -10°C, and I'm sure you don't ride much in even colder temps in Australia. :)
Should be available for a reasonable price, and you'd be supporting local folks.
 
Basic analysis here is usually $25.

Rotella T6 is too thin for this bike.

The Penrite 20w-60 looks interesting. Can you find that at a reasonable cost?

For ages (more than 10 years) I ran full synthetic car oils in my bike (Honda CBR600). That's because to me, the bike oils always seemed over priced for what you got. Often expensive mineral or semi-synthetics with a bike picture on the front. However, it's not as bad now days, and there is a lot more selection than 10 years ago. I just don't change quickly when things are working fine.

My CBR liked the full synthetic Castrol Formula R 10W-60, which later became Castrol Edge 10W-60. I never had any clutch problems with this car oil, also it lasted a full 10k km with a good gear change. You can get this most places, but it does cost, but probably not as much as the Motul. I once spoke to a Castrol engineer over the phone, he told me that the two Edge products 0W-40 and 10W-60 are group IV based oils, while the rest of the Castrol Edge range were full Group III oils.

A mate ran the original M1 5W-50 in his bike (Yamaha SRX600) and though it was great. Another full synthetic car oil.

I've also used the Penrite Racing 10 (10W-40) in my bike. It's made for the road and the track, so no problems running the full distance. It's a 100% Group IV/V oil that is meant to be fully shear stable, with 1680 ppm Zinc, ACEA A3/B3, API SN/CF and bike JASO MA rated. A great car and bike oil, that I picked up easy at Repco.

Penrite also have a Racing 5 (5W-30), Racing 15 (15W-50) and Racing 20 (20W-60). All high Zinc, JASO MA, Group IV/V oils, and easy to find. Fill ya boots.

I use to run the Penrite HPR (Group II / III) oils in my old thumper.
The Penrite HPR 15 Diesel 15W-50 is semi-synthetic and JASO MA rated, plus ACEA A3/B4/E7, API SL / CI4+.

I saw Valvoline full synthetic SynPower 10W-50 on sale at SuperCheap a few weeks ago. Another full synthetic car oil, I haven't used it yet, but it was a good price and I would happily put it in my bike. ACEA A3/B4, API SN/CF. Others have spoken about it on BITOG.

But I have only heard of the VR1 10W-40 Semi-synthetic here. API SJ/CD, street approved, high Zinc. I'd run it in my bike.

Plus there are special bike oils from all the major manufacturers, but I've been having so much fun with the above "car" oils, that I haven't paid too much attention to them. I also find the car oils much easier to find and are often on sale at REPCO or SuperCheap.

There is some talk at the local KTM dealership about the high viscosity requirements and the extended drain intervals. The techs seem to feel that some KTM's recommended 10,000 mile OCI's shear the high viscosity oils down considerably. The reason for the high viscosity is not just that the engine needs it due to high RPM loading, but also that the oil will protect over the life of the oil change interval. As it shears to much less than it's original viscosity.

I'd continue to use the proper viscosity synthetic of choice, and change it often.
