What ISO static test is used to determine elastomeric compatibility with base oils?

I currently keep a spare wiper seal in a container filled with Ballistol to rule out softening and swelling. Is the answer ISO 1817?

ASTM D4289? pieces of elastomer get submerged in oil or grease for 70 hours at 100 or 150°c and any changes in size or hardness get evaluated

[censored], missed the iso part so disregard

I'd go with iso 6072 aswell then

It is ISO6072.

Elastomers are basically "synthetic" rubbers. Sealing is one of the primary applications for elastomers.

When testing base oils and new formulations oil one of the questions to be answered is, "what is the compatibility with various eleastomers?"

We want to know about the changes in the elastomer's volume, dimensions, pliability, mass loss or gain, etc.

An example of published elastomer definitions and compatibility charts can be found at:

http://www.documentation.emersonprocess.com/groups/public/documents/reference/d351798x012_06.pdf

The ISO6072 procedure is a static elastomer test in which the elastomer is submerged in the fluid for a period of 1000 hours. For NBR, HNBR and EPDM, the fluid temperature was maintained at 100ºC, but for FKM, the temperature is set to 130ºC.

After the test, any changes in elastomer characteristics are noted.

ASTM elastomer tests include ASTM D4289, D6546, and D7216.
