While it likely makes little difference to a rarely cycled starting battery, most automatic charging sources stop charging before the battery is indeed fully charged.

Each battery has an Ideal absorption voltage for the temperature of the battery, and the battery must be brought to, and held at this voltage long enough to maximize the specific gravity of each cell.

Automatic chargers are automatic underchargers with a lawyerly and bean counter stamp of approval. The battery engineer is muttering in the corner.

The happiest most long lived Lead acid battery, is the one which gets to live its whole life as close to 100% fully charged as possible.

Every one of my cars(4 on float type maintainers) have batteries that last years beyond they designed life. 10-14 years is common

While I agree that this is true, the automatic chargers get a LOT closer to full charge than an alternator does, which means a lot longer life due to much slower sulfation and other degradatory effects.

Since an automotive battery is also typically not kept in a climate controlled environment, even if well-maintained with the correct float charge, there still will be other issues that arise...
