Amsoil MTF/Honda MTF 2004 S2000

Some S2000 owners have tried the RL MTL. Most seemed to like it. I have seen a VOA but no UOA's. Some others have experimented with mixing it with MT-90 too with good results.

If I become dissatified with Amsoil MTF, maybe I'll test RL MTL. The VOA showed a 10.1 cSt@100C but did not show a VI.

I have had Redline MTL in the tranny of my 03 s2k for at least 5yrs and 30,000 miles, no problems it has never popped out of 1st since I bought with 11000 miles on in 05. I am planning on changeing it with MTL soon.

When I bought my '05 S2000, it only had 14,900 miles on it ... but the factory fill was shot. Tranny was very graunchy, especially when cold. I dumped it and refilled with Honda MTF (the newer, thinner stuff). Better ... but not as good as I had hoped, not as good as all my FWD Hondas.

However, I have come to realize that this tranny, built by Aisin, I believe, is just not that great. Not a great/positive shift feel and easy to miss a shift if you aren't very careful.

Has anyone tried Royal Purple Syncromax? It is about the same thickness as the newer Honda MTF (about as thick as ATFs)

I love Amsoil MTF in my Civic and will probably switch the S2000 over to that stuff when I swap out the Civic's fluid again (probably soon) but I don't have high hopes for shift feel.

I have stayed away from Red Line Oil products in the last several years. Too many mixed performances and variations in batches.

I have not used the RP syncromax personally, but it seems to be an inferior product based on other bitog reviews. I ran honda mtf the first 230k in my accord, at which point i swapped to the new thinner stuff because the old stuff becsme unavailable. It shifted ok, but now i am using amsoil after i found out how thin the type 2 is and like the shift feel.

SOHCman,
I have been asking about RP Syncromax experiences for a couple years now and your bad experience is the 2nd one I've heard about. The other was a GM F-Body user (I believe it was a Tremec tranny they were using). Thanks for posting. I wasn't hot on trying this fluid ... and have now ruled it out completely.

Here is my most recent UOA of Amsoil MTF after almost two years and 7146 miles/72406 on unit. Sample date was 6/21/2014 and tested by Polaris Labs.

Sorry about the post above. I was trying to bring the previous trend over for comparison, but it didn't work.

Let's try it this way:

Here is my most recent UOA of Amsoil MTF after almost two years and 7146 miles/72406 on unit. The 2nd number is the reference oil. UOA Sample date was 6/21/2014 and tested by Polaris Labs.

Silly question...

But I noticed the Honda trans are overfilled from the factory when you remove the fill plug.

Is there any benefit to adding an extra 1/2 Pint of MTF to your manual trans ?

Would it change the shift smoothness with extra MTF ?

No need to overfill. My tranny fill plug allows fluid to drain whenever I change the fluid, even though there was no overfill from the last servicing. It's from fluid expansion from heat (driving). I change the fluid when it's hot. You will find that the same thing happens when you change the differential fluid when it's hot.

Amsoil MTF shows consistently more wear, especially iron, or i am reading something wrong? I also bought Amsoil MTF for my S2000 gearbox

MINick, what is the reference oil? Honda MTF II?

I'm switching this summer from Honda MTF II to Amsoil MTF in my '05 S2000 as I liked it better in my Civic, especially in the cold.
