No, we didn't get the legendary Africa Twin. Honda didn't import many "type R" cars into North America either. Honda thinks that we don't deserve high performance cars and bikes.

NHTSA FMVSS CARB and EPA also had their invisible hands shaping the market. Honda finally outsmarted them perhaps.

Don't know MSRP but if it's 50% less than KTM they will sell many of them.

I think it was called a TransAlp.

Jeez, guys, just watch the freakin' video linked above.
It's called Africa Twin because of the Dakar racing heritage, and (wait for it!) because it's a twin.
The desert is a harsh place, yet can be conquered riding one of these (in theory at least).
Understand now?

Edit: and no, the TransAlp is an entirely different bike.

I like the name, I think it makes perfect sense.

Done right, this bike could be a game changer for Honda in the US.

Of course, we don't have any concrete specs or pricing, but I'm hopeful.

Right you are... my Honda history is rusty.

The ''original'' Africa Twin was the XLV750, made as a privateer Paris/Dakar bike to compete against the BMW twins. I had one for 5 or 6 years, loved it, but a bit heavy for off road use. It wasn't the link to Paris/Dakar that impressed me, but it's link to American flattrack racing - the engine was used as the basis for the RS750.

We didn't get the early ''French'' colour scheme of red, white and blue, but got the later black engine gold wheel model. I painted mine in Honda XR colours.

There is also a history of the US using different names for models from the rest of the world.

Examples:

Yamaha YZF600R (in the US) called a "Thundercat" everywhere else.
Honda's "FireBlade" never made it over there, but the bikes did.
Kawasaki USA like to slap the "Ninja" name on everything.

So maybe the "Africa Twin" name will or won't get to the USA, even if the bike definitely does.

I sort of doubt that the Honda Powersports website would be calling it the Africa Twin if it was not to be called the Africa Twin.

I'd never realised the 'Blade wasn't called a 'Blade in the US. Learn something everyday! Another one they have is the Kawasaki GTR1000 and GTR1400 - known there as "Concours". I'd love to know the science behind different names for different markets.

FireBlade was 900RR.
SP1/SP2 was RC51
ZX6ENinja = ZZR 600 (Kawasaki USA call anything mildly sporty a Ninja)

I've read it is usually either marketing or someone else legally owns the name.

I'm a bit surprised that the new Africa Twin allegedly will have a parallel twin - like the old 750 Super Ténéré - but I find the bike interesting.

Well parallel twins are usually cheaper to manufacture and more compact. So it makes a lot of sense, and if you you a 270 crank in one, it does mimick a V or an L twin.
