This is for my Sig Accord. Local place has a special where they evacuate, leak test and recharge with up to 1 lb of freon for $70. Is this reasonable?

That is about right. It cost me $60. last year for the same service plus 2 cans of freon.

Most systems use more than a pound of refrigerant.
If you have a large leak then you need it evacuated and repaired and then charged. A small leak, I just top up.

There is nothing wrong with that price but if it's being evacuated, it's being evacuated or a reason. They are fishing for more work.

First hopefully you do not have any sealer in your system.

Look under your hood and there will be a sticker that shows the quantity of R134a that is needed. A shop will use that quantity when filling your system.

You can ask the shop how much will it cost with xxx lbs of R134a.

But the A/C system is 100% sealed. If your A/C runs fine you need no service even after 50 years. If your system does not run then they need to find the leak, then go on with the R134a service. A leak can be as simple as a bad o-ring.

The test for a working A/C is done with a probe stuffed 4" into the A/C vent. It should be 40 degree less than ambient.

I just top the one up on the Cherokee every year. The schrader valve leaks. I can't see putting the money into the Aircon on a 15 year old vehicle.

That's a good price. My guy charges a flat $60.
ONCE a friend I brought to him had a dead, dead, dead system. It was so empty he charged him $70 with apologies.

I thought the idea behind evacuation was to measure the EXACT amount of PAG oil as well as 134a put back into a system. Kira .

My Schrader valve is leaking too. I got quoted between $150-200 for a vacuum of the system, replacing the valve and filling of the system.

Great Price.

last quote I got around here (the industry is regulated) was $600, and workmates have received similar for a 14 year old car, as they "have to" do $600 of stuff to "comply"...when questioned, it's non specific stuff that they have to do.

Always done it myself but if need be its not bad. My younger brother owns a AC Repair Business he normally just gives me the odd amount of freon I need from left over tanks.

Lots of R12 being used around here

Evacuation won't remove the oil in the system. That is accomplished by flushing the system, and draining the compressor. If the refrigerant has completely leaked out, it's a guess to how much oil escaped with the refrigerant.

I havn't used my AC system (which used to work) for about 3 years, and am afraid to try it now in case its "dry" and use might damage it.

(I don't know if that's a possibility, since I don't know much about aircon and have never worked on a system, but generally idleness isn't good for machinery)

Are there any non-destructive DIY tests that can be made without specialist equipment, (which is unlikely to be buyable here)?

If not, I'll start asking around for local recommendations on somewhere to take it to.
