Well I've finally gotten around to getting my valve cover off, the Beetle is just shy of 172k miles. These engines are prone to high cam wear and I decided to check out the cam, all looks good to me. Most of its life it's had 10k-12k mile oil changes at the dealership, a couple more than that. I think any dark seen is just the extremely black oil.

looks nice, definitely a diesel with that sooty oil, lol. I like the tappet design on these.

It calls for 10k. It usually went a couple thousand more.
 
Looks good, for a diesel! I really don't miss working on them though, my hands would be stained black for days. Yeah, I could've worn gloves...
 
Looks pretty familiar. Post on tdiclub but i doubt there is issue here.
 
Looks to be relatively clean and fresh with minimal wear occurring on its highly loaded cam surfaces. Nice.

Now what's going on with that clutch and flywheel?!
