Had a new rack and pinion installed in my 01 nissan sentra. Now when I go to back my car up and slightly turn the wheel to the left I get a thunk sound that the only way I can describe sounds like a bang on an empty steel drum. Do rack and pinions need time to break in?

No. Something is loose.

Check the mounting bolts and any associated bushings/isolators to make sure everything is tight.

You shouldn't hear any noise at all from the rack.

No. Some cheaply rebuilt racks ship with worn inner tie rod ends and sloppy bushings. Did your rebuilt PS rack come with carelessly applied cheap paint?

From my own experience dealing with a lot of racks over the years they have 50% failure rate or better, other remans are not much better. I went through 3 of them to get one that worked properly.
Now i will only buy OE new/reman or ZF reman for German cars or rebuild it myself if the parts are available.

I hope there is just something loose.
