so, our carbed 82 c10 has a crate motor in it from 90 or 89. motor only has 80 k on it and soon it will be back on the road.

it will be used for daily driving, grocery getting, hauling trailers when life says so, and lots of stop and go...

what weight oil would you run in it ? my areas low is high 30s and highs are 110+

Heavy duty oil in a 15w40 grade

or a good 10w 40 oil

or if you want to spend money on synthetic go with Mobil 1 0w40

do you think id notice any difference in economy with a thinner oil than 1540 ?

I have an '88 Caprice and the manual calls for 5W-30. Roller engine, so you don't need any additional ZDDP. Any off-the-shelf 5W-30 works. Mine consumes some, so a high-mileage 5W-30 is a good bet.

With a carb'd 305 in a full-size truck? Nope.

For FE upgrades, fuel injection on the engine.

For 350 engines, GM Performance Parts specifies a 10W-30 and Edelbrock specifies 10W-40. These recommendation have been in place for a long, long time. You don't need a thicker oil just because of ambient air temps above 100F.

I run Pennz High Mileage 10w40 in my 83 Silverado with the 305, with 221K on the clock she's still my daily driver

Any namebrand 5-30
I have a 1987 Ford 302 truck and this is what I use.
You dont need to go thicker.
The temps here are a little colder but just as hot in the summer.

Agreed

I ran 10w-30 in a 1984 Scottsdale with a 305 in Las Vegas through three summers. No issues, no overheating, no burning oil.
