Hi, I am a bit worried that my garage where i did a oil service of my MB E63 AMG didn't use the correct oil.

The garage is a MB specialist(not authorized though..) since 25 Years back and should know what they are using....

I know my car needs MB 229.5 spec and 5w-40 as approved by MB, however the garage used Q8 Formula Excel 5w-40 which only covers 229.3

Is this oil fine for my car or should i change for another one?

If the garage is specialized in MB repair/maintenance they should know E63 requires 229.5 not the old 229.3. This engine is very expensive probably more than $20-30k US dollars to replace, I would take the car back to the garage demand they change the oil to correct brand/grade that meets MB 229.5.

Mobil 1 0W40, Castrol Edge 0W40 are two of many that meets MB 229.5 spec.

Q8 Formula Excel long life 5W-40 is listed on the Meredes Benz list of 229.5 Multi-grade engine oils. You mention the Q8 Formula Excel 5W-40. Verify/Confirm specifically which product was used and if they truly did NOT use the Long Life product then request a re-fill on their €.

If they're a Mercedes specialist then I would suspect they did use the correct product. AMG is well known and the requirements among the service staff are also well known.

Ok i looked at the service protocol and it says 5w-40 and 229.51
but on the receipt it says Q8 Formula Excel, i can't find on Q8s site that Formula Excel is MB229.51 classified or even the Long Life version....

Strange...

If they've used Q8 Formula M Long Life 5W-40, it meets MB Sheet 229.51 as a low SAPS oil. Q8 Formula Excel 5W-40 is only MB Sheet 229.3 accredited.

Unless it's a misprint on your receipt, go back to them and ask they replace it with Formula M Long Life 5W-40, if they deal exclusively with Q8Oils, or another oil meeting MB Sheet 229.51. If it's a misprint, ensure they issue you a corrected copy.

Specialize and Authorized are two different things. Specialized means they fix a lot of them. Authorized means that M-Benz recognizes that they follow the factory standards when servicing their vehicles. I'd find a different shop or even use the dealer with a vehicle that expensive. When an engine costs 20-30k you want to MAKE SURE they are using the correct fluids and parts, not the ones they "think" are correct. The oil should be fine in that car, but monitor the oil level to be safe, and use the correct oil next time.

Talked to the garage and they made a mistake on the receipt as the serviceprotocol showed 229.51, they have put Q8 Formula M Long Life which is the correct oil for the engine so everything went well....

To be very technical, the correct oil for your AMG gasoline engine is MB 229.5 and NOT 229.51 (which is lower in sulphated ash and phosphorus to protect diesel particulate filters). Although in Europe, assuming ultra low sulphur gasoline is used, I'm not sure there will be much of a drawback from using 229.51 over the correct 229.5

I would be suspicious of a service department that makes (serious) TYPOs with the lubricants and oil used in my vehicle. It is just too easy to brush off a mistake with a casual comment. JMO. ed
