Got an email from Chevron regarding the upcoming PC11 oil spec. Follow the link for more info...

Why not?

Because he doesn't have anything to experiment with regarding the new category?

I wont either, so long as I don't buy anything new, which is highly unlikely.

I'm glad that a US specific problem currently. If it reaches us over here then more people will start to look at specialist oils from boutique blenders - I'm surprised I'm not seeing the same reaction from US BITOGers, tbh..

Unless they're about to drop a bomb shell on us its not going to affect the vast majority. The way I understand it there will be 2 specifications coming up, the new spec which will be among other things a light viscosity and something similar to the CJ4 spec that is currently out for the older iron. They're not going to just abandon 40w oil, too many old pre emission engines on the road that were designed to run off it.

I think the key will be to get the OEM's recommending the right thing and the users actually following that recommendation.

CK-4 for the "older" iron
FA-4 for the new stuff and people who will try to take advantage of the fuel economy benefits of newer robust 15W30 or 10W30 HDDEO

I know that Paccaar is already recommending 10W30 CJ-4 as factory fill for new model year engines. Odds are these will run fine on FA-4 oils when they come out in 2017

I believe most OEMs are on board with the thinner oils now. Certain Cummins engines are now FF with xxw30 and I believe Mack is too.

Anyone can still experiment.

I don't need a modern diesel to use CJ-4, after all.

Up here, when the spec comes out, I suspect Imperial Oil will get rid of all the older spec Delvac stuff in short shrift. They haven't had anything older than CJ-4 for a lot of years. They hung onto SM M1 up here forever, but the CI-4 and CI-4+ stuff didn't last long.

Folks can still readily buy older CI-4 and CI-4+ oils now even though we have had CJ-4 on the market for quite a while. The same will be true on new specs. I will just continue to use a CI-4+ or CJ-4 as I have been for quite a while. There is no pressing need to upgrade the oil I am using unless I upgrade to a new motor. So PC-11, CK-4, or whatever they decide to call it will not concern me at all.

Every heavy diesel OEM is factory filling with 10w30 now. No exceptions. I would be willing to bet all the pickup diesels are getting the same treatment.

I can tell you that as of 15 Cummins is still using 5w40 as FF in the Ram. That could very well change for 16.

And a recent delivery of a International Prostar with a Cummins 15L ISX to a friend of mine was factory filled with 10w30. Can't speak to their littler diesels or what Dodge is doing when they drop one in their pickup.
