This is not surprising. I noticed this when selling Toyota and Scions at a local dealership
Scion was designed to be the "discount" Toyota aimed at the youth market who just want something "cool" and sporty. There are many places you can find their cost-cutting approach in terms of lack of NVH dampening and refinement. I suppose this just adds an additional element of "sportiness" that we old people don't find very amusing.
Although more engine noise has been associated with making the driver feel like the car is more powerful.
