Adjustable Oil Filter Wrench..

Because of the limited space... I have to use some socket type wrench. And I gave away my other two socket type wrenches because they didn't fit the filters I was using on my new truck so I bought a new one. And my previous oil change I used a Fram Oil Filter and this new wrench doesn't fit it. Thats why I bought the adjustable one.

I would get a cap wrench that fits the filter. Don't give them away when you sell a car. You will end up with many that some day may fit another new car.

The Lisle one that fits the end was the one that broke loose the hydraulic oil filter on my Bobcat after the cap wrench broke (spot welds).

Be aware that a different brands of filters may have different fluting even for the same vehicle filter.

I have about 20 various filter wrenches.

I would prefer something with 3 prongs myself.

Nothing beats 360* of contact though IMO. My dad has a wrench with a handle that wraps a steel band around the filter. I know you said space is limited, but you'd be surprised. I had a heck of a time getting the factory filter off his truck by hand and had to use this thing. It was a bear to get to, but it worked. A panel needs removed from the skid place and you have to reach up and to the right. Its terrible.

In my experience there is no ONE oil filter wrench to rule them all. Regardless, I've been blatantly surprised by the rubber band type. The same ones you see used for unscrewing plumbing fixtures. There is only one car I work on that I cannot use that rubber band on and that one I use the metal end cap socket type and even then... that slips.

Only once did I have to use a screwdriver. I just jabbed a hole in the filter with it. Let the oil inside drain and jab it as far as it can go to use as a handle. I told my father that, then he introduced me to channel locks.

I have the import Lisle you posted a link to, yet you say it's a fram?

This one worked very well on an over torqued filter on a 4.2 F150. Lol, I had to strain to loosen it with a 3/8ths ratchet.

I like the FloTool Super Graphite cap wrenches. They work the same way as the metal cap wrenches but that don't stick and come off easy.

I've got both sizes of those. I also have every size of K-D Swivoil band wrenches.

You can also get no mess oil filter caps. You can put a plastic bag inside so you don't have to clean up the bellows afterwards.

I scored a used Hazet 2172 oil filter wrench on EBay for about $20 including shipping, and couldn't resist bragging. New, you can find it listed for $175. Someone lists a new one on the 'Bay for $99, ships from Germany. Used price never seemed to drop below $75.

The reason I need it is I bought some Fram Ultra XG7317 filters at Walmart, got them home, and found the rough stuff they put on the end prevents my regular cap wrench from fitting.

This is my go to oil filter removal tool! As said previously no one tool will do every job. I also have a set of blue point steel band wrenches, the blue point filter pliers and a bunch of Lisle cup sockets. When all else fails I apply the kung fu death grip!
