Didn't get any responses on hyundai-forums, reposting here; any guesses might save me the trouble of looking through every entry in the service manual and on shopping websites. I don't want to think about what might happen if I can't relocate the part to its installation spot.

It has a squeeze bulb on the one end, the other looks like it would fit inside a pipe. I need to know where it fell off from and put that thing back where it came from.
Here's where it fell off, in the tray below the air filter; that tray was covered in motor oil (or possible transmission fluid, but probably motor oil); the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced, that's probably where the oil is from).

Here's what the piece looks like, it's about two inches in length, an inch in diameter:

Transaxle air breather?

If ATF was overfilled then it's ejected from the hole where that plug would be and maybe why the engine bay is oily

"Cap-Air Breather - Ref No. (PNC): 45276B
45276-36000"
Makes sense; it's not clear from the diagrams how I'm supposed to put it back.

45276b doesn't look much at all like the part; then again their drafting software staff might not have been exact with rendering a relatively low priority part--could be an inaccurate picture but still the actual part in its spot as it relates to the other components.

Look around above the transmission case for a hole that looks like it should be plugged and just push it in. Remove the air box if you need to get a better look.

Make sure your ATF level is ok, check the dipstick for instructions it may say that you have to check the level with engine on and tranny in Neutral instead of usual park.

I went to the local Hyundai dealer. One of the mechanics says the part is a left over piece from the factory manufacture of the car. It's a piece they use to install the input sensor.

The bad news is that the transmission fluid indicates a leak somewhere in the ATF lines. It could be a slow drip (likely), or a bigger leak in the lines (that might not be ATF) from further in the front of the compartment that is being blown back. I doubt I'm going to be able to find the source of the leak, which means replacing everything that could potentially be causing it. It looks like I've got another big complicated project ahead--find the part numbers for the hoses, clamps, screws, etc., figure out how to disconnect and install the new ones, etc.. Any advice in starting the project are welcome.

Why do you doubt that you can find it? Clean everything off really well and take it for a short drive. Then reinspect for leaks- you should be able to find it...

I cleaned the area below the air filter and above the transmission. After I took it for a drive and let the car warm up and did some abrupt braking and acceleration, I reinspected it. The fluid looked like it was concentrated closer to the engine block, and the consistency, color, and texture in the pooled area looked the same as the area around the valve gasket seal: greasy, black mixed with desaturated yellow, and watery consistency with ashen bits mixed in. I'm pretty sure the mystery leak is from the valve gasket seal needing to be replaced, especially due to the similar leaks around the valve cover bolts.
Here's a picture of what the pooled fluid looks like when it has been wiped up with a paper towel:

I should correct that I'm referring to the valve cover, not the seal; the gasket seal is the piece by the timing belt.
