Longest lasting CV shaft?

My 96 Camry's passenger side shaft is beginning to fail at 248k. 19 years old and 248k isn't bad.

Contrast that to my parent's 1982 K car, which had a CV shaft fail at 30k.
 
the shafts last forever unless you put stupid power through them, it's the joints that fail. Outers usually fail more often than inners.

Not sure what you can get, I like GKN for everyday applications
 
Our 2002 Camry with 260,5xx miles has one original and one replacement with about 100k fewer miles. We found a torn boot. Had the boot replaced and drove it maybe another 50k before the axle needed replacement.
 
Not looking for brand opinions.

I was just curious to see how long others had CV shafts last on their vehicles....
 
The CVs on the scirocco have been there the 11 years I've owned the car, done 30ish thousand miles,
I had CVs on a previous car last 80,000 miles of hard use before I sold it with the same joints, still functioning perfectly..
 
Just replaced one on my RX at 218,000 miles. The inner boot just started leaking grease, probably could have driven like that for many miles. But, I couldn't sleep well at night knowing there something's wrong! lol
 
Both shaft assemblies are still original on my '92 Vigor, though I've caught the boots 2-3 times now very early with tears in the boots, so I've had the boots replaced without losing the joints to contamination.
 
Depending on the brand/cost, sometime the reman's have cheap boots that tear easily and cost you money again! So, whatever you buy, make sure they have better material for the CV Boots(Not Plain Rubber)!

I don't know if the better material is polyurethane or WHAT! I just don't know!

mny son in law has just sold his '02 Peugeot 406 diesel with 280+ k miles behind it. On its second clutch, 3rd alternator and battery, numerous tires and brake replacements, and still on its original CV axles, not even a replacement boot for either side.

Yes, it's the joint that fails. Usually due to a ripped boot that allows dirt to enter.

On my 2003 Saab with 148k miles I replaced a bunch of parts in the front as a preventive measure, including brakes, wheel bearings, suspension parts, etc. I had to remove the wheel bearing/hub assemblies from the axle shafts on both sides, so I went ahead and replaced the outer CV boots after cleaning/regreasing the joints. The first side took about 90 minutes and the other one about 45 minutes since I knew what I was doing. The only special tool I needed was a plier to crimp the boot clamps. I figure now they should be good for the life of the car.

How is it failing? Is it making noise yet? I would just reboot it if you can and hang onto the OEM shaft.

I'm not sure that is a fair comparison. I don't know of any CV lasting over 50,000 miles from the 1980s, even if you had a Toyota.

My '85 Nissan made 130k miles, my '86 Vauxhall managed 127k one side, the other still good when it was scrapped at 180+k miles, my '86 Olds 88 still good at 150k, my '89 Buick Le Sabre at similar mileage also still on original driveshafts, to be fair it has has two replacement boots.
Even back in the '60s CV joints regularly saw out the life of the car without failure. I owned a few British FWD cars back in the day, whatever their many other failings, CV joints were mostly trouble free.

2001 Aurora. Left side replaced at 135k with O'reilly's house brand, right side original with 150k on it but the boot started leaking this year.
