Could anyone tell me if the FTIR results for oxidation and nitration neagate the need to test for TBN & TAN

If you're extending your OCI past the factory limits, you need at least TBN to verify the oil can still neutralize acids. IMHO that's less of a problem in the (hot) down under, as long as you're not an extreme short tripper (never getting the oil hot).

The car is not used for many short trips and regulary gets longs runs. I'm only planning on going to 15,000km (9500 miles) as per the service schedule. Only trouble is it takes me longer than 12 months to get there, hence the UOA. Unfortunately they didn't give me a TBN. I thought maybe they only test for TBN if the oxidation & nitration numbers call for it.

Those are great oxidation and nitration numbers. The oil had plenty of life left. But its still good to get an exact value for TBN.

Good to see the oil has held up!

Personally, I wouldn't support Penrite, based on their absurd marketing techniques (thicker is better)... This has led a friend of mine to put 20w60 in his 1980s Toyota Hilux with 280k miles on it. I see no need for that!

But if it works for you, by all means, keep using it! Keep us posted in the future.

I agree that thicker oils are not suited to most engines however I've read that Mitsubishi engines like thick oil and HP10 10w50 is what is recomended here in Australia by a Mitsubishi specialist. This engine has a bit of noise at idle when the oil is fully warmed up, so a thicker oil helps to keep it quiter. I've been told it is either piston slap or a worn gudgeon pin. Hasn't gotten any worse in the 100,000km I've had the car. I've heard the exact same noise on a few other 6G74 engines so its not uncommon.

I'm thinking I will change this oil out at 15,000km and get a UOA done with TBN & TAN.

Jimbo, though Mitsubishi stated 15,000km OCI they were at best using semi synthetic oils and at worst mineral oils.
What would the result be on those instances at 15,000km?

My Verada has near identical km (201,600 currently) but like you I don't do 15,000km per year. I think going over 1 year in OCI isn't an issue with synthetic oils so I may extended OCI to the recommended 15K especially since that's when the service symbol comes up.

Edit:
What does high lead signify?
Who did your UOA, and how much was it?
