Just got a recall letter in the mail about our Equinox. It is about reprogramming the ECU due to it emitting too many pollutants beyond what EPA likes.

I'm on the fence about getting it done. The engine doesn't run particularly smooth and never did (the now infamous 2.4L on the 2010-2012 Equinoxes), not sure if this would help or hurt or not matter. Thoughts?

I'd probably hold off. While I dont like polluting sometimes you sacrifice in many other areas for that 5% less pollution.

How so? They can take it to the dealer and have it done for free.

The dealer doesn't have courtesy drivers that work for free. Some recalls are slow for parts reasons and/or the dealer being backed up doing such recall work.

I was a Honda dealer mechanic before more schooling and becoming a UPS diesel/LNG semi mechanic.
Anything that came in for trade inspection needing recall work that wasn't a Honda product got deducted points.
The guy/gal trading such a vehicle in didn't get top dollar.
