Should I change it?

07 Grand Prix.

I changed the oil last July/August with Valvoline ML FS w/ P1.

The oil only has about 3K miles on it but it's been short tripped all winter. 3-5 days/wk, less than 2 miles.

Obvious concerns are fuel, shearing and all that fun stuff.

Does the '07 Grand Prix have an OLM? I know the Firebird I have has an OLM that takes all of that into account and even with tons of stop and go driving and with the oil being in the crankcase for 5 months, the oil change light hasn't come on yet. I wish it would actually tell me what the percentage is, though.

I still tend to change it early, though... it just makes me sleep better at night with the fun I have with the car at times.

Does your 3800 ever really get up to temperature to burn off some of the moisture/fuel?

I have a similar commute(well, 5 miles, but still), and i just changed mine yesterday. Previous was in October, only put about 2,000mi on the car, but i try to stick to 6 mo/5k whichever is first with my driving habits.

out went the PPPP, in went good ol PYB, replaced the Wix filter with one of it's twins.
this Run will be in until mid october, when i have MC 5w20, and an FL-400s waiting to go on.

though i do have to say...in the maybe 20 mi i've put on since the OC, the PYB is Quieter than the PPPP(or rather the top end tick is quieter, now it just sounds like loud injectors)

No, 3k isn't too much for Maxlife full synthetic. I short tripped the snot out of my 3.1 Buick with Pennzoil Platinum and ran over 6k and it still had TBN ft about 1.6. That was with over 3 hours of idling per week.

I would go 5k minimum.

+1 It will be fine, just keep it topped off. I have MaxLife Blend in my '94 Pontiac since August of 2013 - it's gone about 2500 miles - it's fine.

go to walmart and ask one of their oil specialists who are trained about such things, instead of asking some stranger on the internet

Now that's some sound advice.

Jacky, you just put that in your sig line. It will save you from typing it out so much.

No - Jiffy Lube would probably be better - haha

The counter jockeys at AZ are usually good for real good oil advice too....

Seriously, I would change it. Severe short tripping coupled with winter weather can beat the absolute tar out of oil. I have a couple UOA's on my own vehicles to prove it.

Well, it is April 1st.

Why not take a small sample and send it it? That way you'll know for sure.

Man, how many times are we gonna hear about the 3k oil change...? Your ancestors did 3k oil changes. Times are different now. If that makes you happy, then that's cool. Change every 3k, no matter what, but posting that constantly really doesn't add much to the discussion. Good suggestion to make that a signature.

LOL..It takes so little to make me smile.

"Aunt Minnie" test done by Mobil about 20 years ago:

1. The aunt minnie test is the test of "the severity on the engine oil during this type of testing is attributed to conditions where the engine rarely reaches optimum operating temperatures."
2. The driving test consists of two short cycles, a 3 mile and 1.5 mile test.
3. "Under this severe driving condition, synthetic oil can provide excellent protection against engine wear and deposit formation."
4. The bulk oil temp ranged from 90 C in the summer to 30 C in the winter.
5. Fuel dilution was as high as 11%.
6. Cleanliness was excellent, the deck sludge rating was 9.7 out of 10.
7. "The iron content showed a low rate of increase, only 100 ppm after 40 months, although there has been a steady increase to over 600 ppm over the last 22 months. The source of iron has not been determined, as visual inspection of the engine did not indicate any abnormal wear or corrosion. In addition, elevated iron levels have not appeared in other test vehicles operating under 'aunt minnie' conditions."

The oil was a 5W30 running in a 3.1 L V6 with no oil drains.

The oil volume sampled was 5.5L and make-up was 4.4L. TBN retention was 33.

Test duration was for 60 months.
