I have a 2010 Elantra 62k miles
The tranny fluid is black. The stealership wants $200 to service it.
Any idea what an independant shop would charge?
Thanks,

its around that price if you want the filter replaced
the cheapest you will probaly get is $150

I found that drain and fill transmission gets about the same amount of fluid as using a fluid extractor to siphon ATF from dipstick tube.

I have Mityvac 7201 I bought to change oil in my E430, I then use it to do ATF and brake fluid for other cars. It's 1 of the best fluid extractors for less than $100, I can do extract and refill ATF in less than 10-15 minutes. If you have few cars to maintain think about getting a fluid extractor.

I don't know.
Good question to ask.
I would think a flush and a filter would be the best way.
I think there is a drain plug.I could drain and refill be that would leave a dirty filter.
And I don't want to drop the pan myself.

The Savin grace is that you have a dipstick apparently. Beleive me, that makes all the difference if you do it yourself or even if you take it in. The other setup is a stupid drain overflow level tube. It's a total sham.

+1 its a PITA for sure. Not impossible but I would have paid the extra $20 they saved by eliminating the dipstick.

If it is a flush & filter $200 is a good price. You want the flush & filter.

It would have been 220 dollars at the dealer form my 15 quart 4L80E in an 02 Silverado 3/4 ton.

So 200 is not out of line.

if the price is similar between the dealer and a quick lube place i would pick the dealer
the dealer would have oem parts and not use a universal atf like the quick lube would

it is rather DIY friendly. 24mm socket for the drain bolt, about 3-4 quarts drain out. vavoline maxlife back in. drive away. I'd skip the filter until 120k or so.

If the transmission fluid is as bas as you say, you really want to do the above at least a few times, a week or two apart.

Search your local newspaper for coupons. Often I would be flushing a transmission with 14 quarts of Maxlife for ~$130 when the customer had a coupon.

I would budget for an hr labor plus about 12 quarts of the proper fluid. A lot of places do utilize menu pricing for common maintenance services though.

$200 does not sound out of line at all.

Hyundai is silly expensive here compared to Honda/Acura.

The Acura dealer did my 07 MDX 5 speed auto for $99. My local indy mechanic a Subie specialist charged me $50($13 labor rest fluid) during an oil change. Note dealer rate is $105/hr and my Subie indy is $65/hr.

130k and three fluid changes(first owner did once in first 50k) and it shifts amazingly!
