My experience (Phoenix Hotel, at Eddy and Larkin Sts) was reflected in hundreds of the other lower-star reviews on Tripadvisor. I thought I would be OK with it and most of it doesn't bother me since I lived in San Diego for 3 decades, but walking around by myself in the early evening was frightening, not helped after one guy in a group yelled "hey, whitey." I used taxis to get to and from the hotel after that.
