Interesting. That's good to know. What does the sodium do/why does it matter? Is it corrosive like vinegar?
 
Ionic sodium is a catalyst for oxygen/iron reaction a.k.a. rust. Sodium compounds like NaCl (table salt) or NaHCO3 (Baking Soda) become ionic when mixed with water.

So, if you live on a planet without rain or moisture in the air, you can slather sodium all over your steel and not worry about it.

Great, thanks. I'll add the hot water rinse and brushing to my de-rusting process.
