I run it in my 1995 track rat with absolutely no issues...

It's the factory fill for the Nissan GTR and used in other high performance cars. It can handle heat and racing.
The BM is 20 years old. Did you notice?

Yeah so? 10W40 was a standard back then in Europe, with 5W40 being boutique oil. It is not 10W or 5W or 0W that matters, it is cst at 100 degrees celsius that matters. It is HTHS that matters.
And it matter that it is GT-R, since GT-R runs two really hot turbos unlike that bimmer.
So all that 5W50, 10W50 or 20W50? Forget it, get M1 0W40 or Castrol 0W40 and that is it.
I ran 0W30 in Alabama, which is hotter then Florida, with no issues whatsoever.

Bingo :) And plenty of E39 M5 owners using it too

And engines like the BMW haven't changed in 20 years?

They've become harder on oil, and subsequently the spec has evolved to keep up with this. Ultimately, this makes these lubricants (LL-01) better than the oils recommended for earlier BMW's, and this is why BMW has recommended these lubricants for the older cars.

Ultimately the oil is probably overkill in every sense of the word for this car. But the oil is also a fantastic bargain given its price and performance. I cannot see a reason NOT to use it in this application.

This car does not need a 20W-50.
An HM 10W-40 would be fine for it and M1 0W-40 would be even better.
Your car was built before BMW had any oil spec of its own and BMW simply recommeded very heavy grades, including 20W-50.
If you want to spend a couple of bucks more, M1 0W-40 would be a good pick. If you really think that's too thin, there's always M1 15W-50.
Either grade would work well in FL.
If you want to spend less but still do well by the engine, I'd suggest Maxlife 10W-40, just based upon my own 1995 BMW experience, with an engine having half the displacement of your BMW, although more than half the power.
