My sister has a '98 Escort ZX2. I bought an oil filter for it about 6 months ago. At that time, Purolator recommended the L25230 for the DOHC 2.0 that the ZX2 has. I checked their catalog today and it now says L20195. The 25230 looks very similar to the FL-400S and has a thread-end bypass. I didn't think to look at the 20195 to see if that one has the ZX2 specific bypass. Fram recommends the 8316 which has the special bypass as well. Has anyone else noticed this and found out why they changed the recommendation? I always thought it was odd that the ZX2 used a different filter from the regular Escort. My girlfriend's dad uses the regular Fram 3600 (Purolator 20195) size on his ZX2 and he hasn't had any problems...

Use it!! stay away from the fram and wish her dad luck

I also contacted Purolator to see if they had any information behind the switch to the SOHC size filter. All other manufacturers are still recommending the previous L25230 size (fram ph8316, wix 1315, etc.)

Interesting. I went to the Motorcraft website and did a cross-reference with the L25230 and the L20195. Both of which ultimately crossed over to the FL-400S. Looks like the L25230 and the L20195 are interchangeable?

Edit: I just looked at Purolator's site more closely and looked at the pics and specs of the two filters. They look identical and both have a thread-end bypass. They both have a 12-15PSI bypass. Interesting, yet confusing. I've heard that the FL-400S has a lower bypass setting than that.

Purolator still shows the 98 Escort "Zetec" in their application data.

ThirdeYe - from what I'm seeing, the 20195 is the same filter with only difference being the dome end bypass valve instead of the base end bypass on the 25230. I'd use either one ... I just put a PL20195 on my 2005 Tacoma yesterday ... you probably saw the thread.

I did see that, I posted a comment about it and how the 20195 is what they now recommend. I've come to the conclusion that they're interchangeable as well. I know for example as I posted above that my girlfriend's dad has the same car and he's always used the 20195 equivalent and he hasn't had any issues at all, and he has plenty of miles on his. If I'm getting the filter as part of an oil change deal and the price isn't an object I'll get the 25230 but if I'm paying full price, I'll pay a dollar or so less and get the 20195.

Have you tried the 25230 on your truck? Might be worth a try if you can get a good deal on it. I'd imagine that a thread-end is theoretically preferable...

Nope ... just the 20195 so far. I was using Toyota 90915-YZZD3 (Denso) filters before the PureONE.

Amazon has a 2-pack of PL25230 for $13.20. They are a little more expensive than the PL20195s ... probably due to the base end bypass valve design.

Amazon - PL2530 2-Pack

I'm not convinced that a base end bypass valve makes any real difference ... but "in theory" they would seem to be better.
