A hardwood finish can last 20 years depending on a few things. How its taken care of,how many people walking on it and what part of the country.
Hardwood floors take the most abuse in sandy areas where sand is brought in on shoes.
Also sweeping with a broom will dull the finish.
So take a family of 5 in a sandy area where the floor is broom swept a couple time a week and you would be lucky to get 10 years out of it.
Just like a car it depends on a lot of factors how long it will last.

The hardwoods in our home were installed when we built our house 20 years ago this year. They've had lots of traffic, dogs, kids, and just about anything else that normal life can throw at them. We've damp mopped, vacuumed and occasionally cleaned an area with something like 409. They're even in the kitchen in front of the stove where they take occasional grease spatters and dropped food.

They still look like new.

There is a Swedish finish that is very expensive and toxic when applied.Installers wear respirators when applying it.I don't know a lot about it but it is extremely durable.
I wonder if that's what you have.
