I would like to make my own soy wax container candles. Why soy wax? It's renewable, non-toxic, biodegradable, and it burns slower and cooler than paraffin wax. A 10 pound sack of soy wax granules can be had for $20, shipping included, so making soy wax myself may not be economical. But if want to make soy wax from soy bean oil via hydrogenation just for kicks, how do I best go about it? I can set a up a lab in the garage or in the basement.

Handling hydrogen requires a lot of safety equipment and the proper reaction vessels. In a lab, we typically used what was called a rocking bomb hydrogenator that would safely allow high hydrogen pressure while the reaction was rocked back and forth to ensure full mixing. I would just buy the product and be done with it. No muss, no safety issues, etc.

I recommend a rental storage locker.
