Also, it pulled out the stuck Land Cruiser (one of the vehicles being praised above).

I don't think it is exceptional off-road or anything but I think with decent tires it would do well. Obviously adorned with a set of PSS's or the like however, it will appear less capable than it actually is.

Ground clearance is a contributing factor and that's a big hindrance for a lot of the "sport" SUV's.
 
Several years ago a very hard rain washed a sea of mud over a section of the road to our house; it was over 15" deep in places. Our X3 made it through without any drama whatsoever. The foglight recesses as well as the brake calipers were covered with mud. It cost me $10 worth of quarters to clean it up at the local car wash.

Yup. While helping out a friend, I almost got the Jeep stuck in about 10 inches of icy, wet, soft snow yesterday. It was barely dragging the diffs, but making forward progress was a 4 wheels spinning affair with very slow progress.
