2002 Merc Cougar--Fix or Scrap?

Before you write it off, check the PRNDL range switch. This potentiometer goes bad all the time on fords.

I swapped it out yesterday to no effect.
 
fix it, for less than a grand, call any and all shops in your surrounding area up to 50 miles away. That engine will go forever. If the body is good, keep it going. Put the money you save in something more useful, like gold or silver.

What exactly is it doing or not doing? Slipping, not going, no reverse, no drive?

To just Remove and Replace the trans or a full rebuild? 13 hours seems a long time to get a trans in and out. I'd figure 8 hours tops.

No reverse.
 
I would not put a $2-3k transmission into a 13-year old car.

But, maybe talk to 901Memphis, and see his thread in the ATF section - he decided it was worth it for a rusted-out 02 Century!
