When considering oversized oil filters

I know the thread size has to match absolutely. Is length and OD always ok as long as there is enough space? And are there any other things I need to consider? Thanks

If it fits ..it fits. The things you want to look at is/are if it has some oddball bypass setting or if the gasket is way out of whack with spec. Make sure that the other attributes are comparable ..if both have ADBV's and whatnot.

What's it for? It would allow those reading the thread to tell you what worked for them ..or what didn't.

It's for a 2000 Camry 4 Cylinder engine. There are some Mobil 1 Oil Filters at Walmart for ~$8 but they don't have the M1-103's but only the M1-209s. From the Mobil 1 Website the specs are:

M1-103
3/4"-16 Thread
2.90 (74mm) Height
2.74 (70mm) OD

M1-209
3/4"-16 Thread
4.44 (113mm) Height
2.96 (75mm) OD

You can use a Ford FL1A filter (Wix 51515 or M1-301) if there's lots of space around the filter. Increases sump capacity by about .5 qts.

Ground clearance, clearance from anything that could touch it when the engine moves on the mounts.

Heat from headers/cats.

Warranty issues? (not on your 2000)

Quite a few things you have watch for if going to run a oversize filter.

My Camry, and yours, specs a WIX 51394. I use a 51396. Same filter specs, just a little longer. I have cut them open after as much as a nine month OCI, to find they still look great inside. All the filter this engine needs.

I just compared an M-103 and an M-209, it seems to be a big difference. Not only does it look huge, but I'd be worried about the gasket seating correctly. It very well may work, but it looked odd enough for me to not get the M-209 for my Prius, I'd trust the M-103 for up to 20k with Amsoil SSO.

M1-103 is the only one works for 2000 Camry in Mobil1.

They are the equivalent to 14476 and 14477 Puro or 51394 and 51396 Wix.

It is only the size of 14476 or 51396.

You can get the 14477 or 51396 if you want bigger size.

I tried the above on my 02 Camry 2AZFE. Awful rapping at start-up which gets worse during the OCI. Must be filter's position in relationship with the oil pump.

Go to the Wix website http://www.wixfilters.com/ and compare THEIR filters to each other.
Once you have another manufacturer's #, you can cross reference it on the website.
Compare THAT filter with the one that comes up when you locate the WIX filter that is listed for YOUR vehicle.
The WIX website lists the GASKET size as well as the threads.

From there, you can choose the filter brand you want to use.

The WIX website lists the 51396 filter for the 2002 Toyota Camry with the 2AZFE motor.

The 2002 Camry with the 1MZFE motor calls for the 51348.

My 2003 Sienna with the 1MZFE motor calls for the 51348 filter and I use the WIX 51516 filter.

You can use the Mobil 1 M1-209 filter on the Toyota Camry / Corolla engines, both 4- and 6-cylinder. Using this size filter increases the volume of oil in the sump by 0.27 quart (8.64 oz) over the M1-103 (or other manufacturer's equivalent - Purolator PureOne 14476), and increases your filter surface area significantly (almost double, although I am not exactly sure of the sq. in. difference). The O.D. of the filter gasket is a bit larger than the M1-103 (Purolator PureOne 14476 / 14477), but still fits on the mating surface well enough to prevent leaks. I am not making this statement based on anything I have been told, but instead on what I am actually using an oversized filter (same size as M1-209) right now on my 2006 Toyota Corolla (1zzfe) and my girlfriend's Camry (5sfe), and have been doing for a while.

Same here. 5sfe is a sludge monster. Been using the FL400s/FL2005/Ph3600/PL20195.... for years now. I figure each extra ounce of oil capacity is one ounce further away from sludge.

LOL, the 5sfe is not at all a sludge monster, do some research and you'll come to the same conclusion, dummy.
