I was looking at Motorcraft and Rotella oils at walmart (the only place in walmart I will go) and noticed the Rotella had a CJ and SM rating, where as the Motorcraft oil did not...is the Rotella a weaker diesel oil and is the Motorcraft dangerous to use in a gas engine with a cat.?

Motorcraft doesn't dual rate its CJ-4 lube to avoid confusion, so in this case it would be fine in a gasoline engine.

Not sure but I do know the driving force is the higher ZDDP, if you read on the 10w30 motorcraft bottle it warms of damaging cats if used in gasoline engine that are equipped with them.

A more appropriate comparison would be their diesel 10w30 oil instead of the 15w40. Probably the same amounts of additives though.

There are a bunch of diesel engines that use vastly different oils.

Traditional diesel oils that only carried a typically CF rating, and built for specialist applications produced a lot of ash on the piston tops, which made for pre-ignition hot spots.

As to a a modern, "diesel only" chain brand oil, Supercheap Calibre "diesel 15W40" was CI-4 only on the bottle, but was rebottled Delo Gold Ultra, which was SL, and a bunch of manufacturer approvals.
