Here's a couple pictures I took today while doing some service on the Cavalier. Drain & fill with Maxlife full synth, added an oversized wix filter so I could feel a little better about putting 5 qts in instead of the spec'd 4.5. Of course replaced the valve cover gasket(it was a little leaky). Also cleaned the tb and replaced plugs & wires, all in under an hour!

I was a little surprised for it to be as clean as it was, only a little varnish on the valve cover itself.

You've been running synthetic or mostly conventional oil ?
Either way, it looks great for the 160k miles -
Thanks for the pics

How many miles when you bought it?
How many miles typically per OCI?

Whatever you have been doing it looks great.

And can someone enlighten me.... I have only worked on dohc engines

This is an inline pushrod 4cyl
why are there 2 singled out valves on the ends of the engine?
3 pairs in the middle and a single on each end?
Thx

This is only the second oil change I've done since I bought it 3k miles ago. I'm glad the owner was truthful about the frequency of service! The plugs were ngk so had been changed at some point, I put in some AC Delco plats, plug wires were original.

If you look each cylinder is actually evenly spaced, but it does look weird.
The first two are for I think that is #4, the next two 3, the next two 2, the next two 1. Could be 1, 2, 3, 4, not sure how it is numbered.

I believe it's left to right, 1, 2, 3, 4. And yes it's a pushrod inline 4. Thrashy but durable.

You're very welcome! I enjoy them quite a bit as well so I thought I'd contribute. I plan on doing a UOA on this run as well as a filter autopsy. 7500 miles to go!

Afaik, the ecotec was introduced mid year in 2002. Ecotec is stil a pushrod.
