Hello!

I recently acquired a 2000 Echo, got it cheap enough I didn't really bother getting it checked out... Figured a Toyota with 145k km (~90k miles) shouldn't really have any mechanical problems.

Main issues are it sat for 1-2 years, so I replaced the battery and it fired right up, yay!

Then I drove it.... tons of hesitation off the line, bucks its way up the rev range eventually getting some power.. but after driving enough to get the engine warmed up the oil pressure light comes on. Not only that, it sounds like a diesel it clacks so much... I really was getting worried it was going to throw a rod or something.

I just got an oilchange done on it so it is full of oil (checked a few extra times too)...

Is there a likely possibility that the oil pump has gummed up and not working properly due to it sitting for so long? Anyone know how much work it is to replace one of those?

I was thinking of putting a can of seafoam through it to see if that can loosen things up?

Thank you for any help you can provide...

I'd start with the obd codes if it has any.

If you suspect the pump, you could pull the pan and see if it's clogged at the pickup.

Sounds like it has more than one issue.

First thing is a tune up. Plugs , wires , air filter , fuel filter, pcv.

GoStumpy,

Oil pressure light coming on when hot without the clickety-clack might have been just a bad sending unit but the engine is telling you something.

You can thread a mechanical oil pressure gauge into the oil gallery (temporarily swapping out the sending unit) to check the oil pressure but I think the pressure is low.

Now what to do about it? Well, I would pull the valve cover off of it and see if it's sludged up. Not varnished but sludge.

If it is there is a possibility the oil pump pickup screen is partially covered. Opinions vary on how to remedy that problem. If the oil pan can be easily dropped, then there you go, drop it and manually clean out what you can.

Trav posted something awhile ago as a step to step recommendation about filling the pan with diesel to let the screen soak but not starting it.

Did you check the basics such as the oil level and oil appearance? You might try a quick oil/filter change with PYB 5W-30 to see if that helps but I'm guessing a bottom end and maybe top end cleaning is in order.

Oil pumps don't "gum up", but pickup screens do plug up with poor maintenance aka infrequent oil changes.

It's a matter of assessing how to clean out the engine, sludge-wise without further endangering the engine. I don't think the engine with 90k miles has worn bearings with increased clearances causing the low oil pressure and noise, at least I wouldn't think so, as Toyota engines are know for their durability.

Good luck. Undoubtedly many other posters will suggest MMO, etc. (aka a chemical miracle worker) which may or may not work.

Gary

probably someone forgot to change the oil for 30000 miles.=gummed up everything with sludge.

Dont drive it like it is..

might be recoverable. might not.

The oil looked OK, but my friend got the oil change done at Jiffy Lube, so I didn't actually get to see the old oil when it drained... [censored].

I think pulling the pan and checking the pickup screen should be first on the list, if it sat that long bad things could have happened...

1nzfe is an extremely durable engine. The pan shouldn't be a difficult drop.

there is a screen in there that can get crudded up.

Here's a thread from ToyotaNation about general maintenance for Toyo engines...with the Camry as a starting reference point.

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/104-5t...anted-know.html

My recommendation, other than changing the 1st OC at a very short interval (perhaps 3k miles) is to change ALL FLUIDS...coolant, brake, power steering, and AT...
Also change the plugs and PCV valve and valve hose if the ends are brittle-hard.

With regards to your posted issue...pull the valve cover when you change the plugs...that will expose the top of the engine and give you an idea of its condition...change the valve cover gasket at that time as well...

Hi buddy i recently got a echo 2000 with 252k on it motor run super good but it started to do the same thing as your, we took the valve cover off it was a mess in there my cousin own a service station he had to take the oil pan out to clear that screen too, my engine light still goes off after awhile when it hot even more since ive added a cleaning stuff in my oil, so today were gona take the pan off again and clean it again.

here are couple pics that i took from the valve cover

Oh my god!!
That is one gross, sludged up mess!

As suggested, pull the valve cover to get an indication of engine internal cleanliness/neglect.
Check out MadMikes photos in this thread for reference.
Post your findings.

Yup removing the oil pan and cleaning the suction hose pis the screen solver the diesel knocking sound when low oil pressure light came on

Storing for a few years doesn't immediately correlate to engine oil gum up (good luck, unless you have extremely used/old oil in the crankcase to begin with). I have done and stored cars for up to 8ys with conventional oil before (with some prep procedures beforehand).

If that engine consistently exhibits loud clacking noise under loaded acceleration and check engine light comes on when warm, suspect the crank and/or rod bearings are worn due to lack of maintenance (excessive clearance).

Assuming that the crank and rod journal is still in good shape, a new set of rod and big-end bearings are in order.

Other things to check (pull the oil pan to check the underneath for oil related issues.

Q.

p.s. don't assume. Find a competent mech to do the diagnosis for you.
